Take a tour of my Spray Booth
Interesting Characteristics
I installed an industrial curtain in my shop that can wall off about 1/3 of the space to make a finishing room. I like to spray finish many of my furniture projects, primarily shellac so I need an enclosure to keep the overspray from getting all over the shop. I did not want to build a dedicated finishing room (too costly and takes up too much space) so I found a company that makes heavy gauge plastic curtains. The ceiling height in my shop is 9 1/2 feet and the curtain is 9ft tall, just right. It comes in two 12ft lengths that run along a track I mounted on the ceiling. They velcro together tightly to create an enclosure that I can keep the overspray inside and dust outside. I also have an exhaust fan mounted in a window that I run while spraying. To avoid sudden temperature changes (especially in the winter) I only run the fan for short durations - a few minutes. That's all it takes anyway to clear out the cloud of finish hanging in the air.
Commentary
The Spray Booth is one of the primary reasons most (actually all) of my machines are mobile. A number of machines occupy the same space so when I have a big project to finish, I wheel the drillpress, bandsaw and grinder out of the area and pull the curtain closed. I still have enough space in the shop to continue working on other things while finishing is underway, the curtain does a nice job of keeping dust out too.
