Take a tour of my ShopSmith
Interesting Characteristics
Yes, I have a ShopSmith one of those multi-purpose woodworking stations. I've had it for a long long time. I know most guys either love or hate these things. Frankly, I'm generally ambivalent. Since I own one I put it to good use as a belt sander, edge jointer and lathe. Its an adequate machine for these functions. I just turn spindles and table legs so the ShopSmith configured as a lathe is pretty good, there is minimal vibration.
Commentary
The jointer has just 4" knives, but that's ok with me. I only use it for edge jointing, I flatten lumber on my planer (see the detail page on my planer for information on how I do that). I've added an extension table to the jointer outfeed table to handle long boards. I did this when I was making a bed, I was edging the long side rails and wanted to extra table length for support.
