Take a tour of my Shop Cabinets
Interesting Characteristics
A place for everything and everything in its place. A motto for anyone with plenty of shop cabinets for storage. I've built cabinets for general storage and specialized storage. I store all sort of things in my general cabinets from sandpaper, screws, glue, wax to biscuits and paper towels. I have two special-purpose tool cabinets. One for my lathe tools and another for my handtools. In both I've made special tool holders and hangers. Check out the photos for details.
Commentary
The cabinets are made from mahogany. This may seem like an expensive wood to use for shop cabinets, but actually it didn't cost me a penny. All that mahogany is recycled decking. I had a friend who decided to replace her deck with that composite material and gave me the old decking. At first, I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it all. But as you can see (from the photographs) I've made good use of that stuff. I did have to clean off the old finish and plane it down but I was able to get an 11/16" thickness. Most of the door panels are curly birch (left over material from a table project). The door panels on my hand tool cabinet are spalted maple. In the end, all that I had to buy was the glass, hinges and pulls.
