Take a tour of my Grinder
Interesting Characteristics
I use a grinder for sharpening lathe tools (and an occasional lawn mower blade). Like many of my machines I've added both commercial attachments and a handful of shop-made attachments. I do this for two reasons - 1) My own attachments and jigs are generally tweaked to the way I work and the type of furniture I build. 2) I save a bit of cash. My grinder is no exception. I have tool holders for sharpening gouges and skews. I really don't like to re-grind an edge by hand, I find it's just to hard to keep the tool at the correct angle to the wheel consistently. I would rather focus my attention at turning, and when necessary make a quick trip to the grinder, touch up the lathe tool and then back to the lathe. When you've got the right tool holders on the grinder this literally takes less than a minute and you're guaranteed an good sharp edge at the right angle every time.
Commentary
My Grinder is enclosed in a plywood box mounted on a mobile base. The box helps keep the grinder's messy dregs from flying all over. Above the grinder (mounted inside the box) is a small work light. This simple light makes such a huge difference, Lo and Behold I can actually see what I'm doing!
